Join us for 5 days of exploring this exciting landscape where the prairie meets the Black Hills.  We'll be going for variety on this instructional photo tour, and we'll be concentrating on 3 separate regions--the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, Custer State Park and Badlands National Park.  This one's going to require switching back and forth between wildlife and landscape compositions a great deal.

Bison Herd & Fall Willows

The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting this vanishing symbol of the American West, and it is a great place to photograph herds of wild horses.  Because the animals are protected here, getting close to them is not a problem.  Choosing between shooting portraits, interactions or herd shots will be the big difficulty.

It's hard to find a better place than Custer State Park for photographing pronghorn antelope and bison, especially if you want to capture their relationship with their prairie habitat.  We'll be staying at the State Game Lodge in the park, giving us easy access to these animals and possibly to bighorn sheep and mule deer as well.  And as long as we're so close, we'll also make time for Mt. Rushmore.

Subtle Colors, Great Rocks

Badlands National Park contains the most spectacular scenery in the thousands of square miles that make up the prairie ecosystem.  Miles and miles of colorful, volcanic soil has eroded into a labyrinth of spires, mesas, peaks, aretes and draws.  To increase our chances of obtaining some special images, we'll be there during the full moon, and this is a landscape where the imagination can really run wild in the moonlight.
