View
There are still scenic places in this world that remain relatively uncrowded, where photographers don’t have to stand shoulder to shoulder to get the shot. Capitol Reef National Park and Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument are on that list, even though their geologic grandeur is as mind-blowing as anything on the planet. The reason this beauty has been overlooked for so long is the very grandeur that makes it a landscape photographer’s Eden. These places are not easy to get to, and the Henry Mountains on the edge Capitol Reef were the last mountain range in North America to be discovered.

There are very few roads in both parks, but even so, many outstanding images can be captured from right beside the vehicle. Other sites, like slot canyons and streams lined with cottonwoods, will require some hiking, but participants will be able to opt out of hikes if they choose. In another incarnation, Cathy and I led hiking tours in this area, so we are the ideal leaders for this photo tour. We know the best combination of most accessible and most scenic locations to optimize our photographic opportunities.

This little-known corner of the Southwest would be on every photographer’s list of must-see locations if they knew what was here. Quite frankly, we’re glad they don’t know about it, or it would be as crowded as everywhere else. We look forward to sharing this lonely part of the Colorado Plateau with you.
